Runes, by themselves, can do nothing. The power is not in the symbol, but in what the symbol represents. The elemental forces of nature are the actual power. The runes act as a link or guide between you and those forces.

Prior to the condemnation of runes by the Catholic church, runes were used in ritual magic, divination and oracle consultation by the Teutonic people of Europe. The suppression of all non-Christian activities during the Middle Ages forced all magical practices underground. Under the threat of death if caught, rune lore was only taught one to one with little written instruction. Only small fragments have survived in written form, thus most of the original magical techniques were lost. Because of this loss, many magic rituals are now taken from other mystic practices and applied to runes.
All magical practices are based on the same universal laws, so hopefully, little is lost in the melding of techniques.
