Centuries before Christianity, the Germanic peoples worshiped pagan gods. These gods, which included Odin, Thor, Loki and many other Norse deities, expressed the forces of nature. They represented the elemental powers of the world. An understanding of these powers was the basis of the Germanic Shaman's magic.

Each natural force was given a name and symbol representing that force's character. By using these symbols, the runes, the Shamans were able to magically influence the world around them.
